Karl Rahn finished off his season with bookend wins taking the final round of the CRCA racing. Kevin Molloy made like gravy taking second in the same race after a strong lead out by Alex Bremer.

In Boston, Clayton Barrows, Jake Hollenbach, and Mike Margarite represented Empire/Northwave at the inaugural Mayor’s Cup, a $20,000 criterium that the boys tore up. Margarite went in some early moves until Barrows countered and formed the winning breakaway with Teddy King (Cervelo Test Team), Shawn Milne (Team Type 1) and Kyle Wamsley ( Colavita/Sutter Home). Clayton would end up finishing third behind Wamsley and Milne but not after taking most of the intermediate sprints and the cash prizes that went along with each sprint.

Lastly on the dirt in Pennsylvania, Stephan Kincaid kicked off his cyclocross season with a 2nd place at the PA series opener. “It’s been another great season for the Empire team” said DS Mike Sherry after the final weekend of racing. “We were definitely more visible than ever this year, picked up some more big result, and held our own in the NRC standings. We’re going to go in to the winter and look to be signing some really great riders for next season. Special thanks to all of our sponsors for making all of this possible for us; Empire Hotel Group, Northwave, Rudy Project, Sportique, Cervélo, Elite, Kid Fuel and Performance Labs HC.”

Great News Spot About the Boston Mayors Cup Empire raced on Saturday

Great News Spot About the Boston Mayors Cup Empire raced on Saturday

Geromino had a great race at Univest in Doylestown. photo by...

Geromino had a great race at Univest in Doylestown. photo by Anthony Skorochod

John Loehner on the mend

After a tough crash in the closing laps of the Univest Grand Prix in Doylestown PA on Sunday, John Loehner is already well on his way to recovery. John suffered a broken hip after getting tied up with a few riders along the barriers in the closing kilometers of the race. All other injuries were minor abrasions and road rash. John underwent surgery on Sunday in Abington PA and is expected back in New York early this week. His family and teammates thank you for all the kind wishes.

Geronimo takes a mid race prime at the Univest Grand Prix...

Geronimo takes a mid race prime at the Univest Grand Prix Criterium in Doylestown, PA

Start of the Team Time Trial

Start of the Team Time Trial

“Big Show” Barrows driving it down the straight at...

“Big Show” Barrows driving it down the straight at the Univest Team Time Trial. While ultimate winners, Planet Energy Pro Cycling made the race fast from the gun alternating attacks from Parisien and Langois the main break of the day consisted of 6-men; John Loenher (Empire/Northwave), Alejandro Borrajo (Colavita - Sutter Home), Mark Walters (BikeKyle), Andres Diaz Corrales (GS Mengoni), Shane Kline (Kelly Benefit Strategies), and Ryan Roth (Planet Energy Pro Cycling). The move went with 15 laps to go and with the right combination of team represented gained up to 22 seconds on the main field. In the end Kelly Benefits didn’t love the combination and Kline fell off the pace forcing a major chase from Kelly to bring the race back together. With 6 laps to go Borrajo put the selection on the ropes wittling the group down to himslefm Corrales, Loeher and Roth. Loehner was caught out for a moment but bridged back and then rode straight past the break with 4 laps to go while the peloton was closing in fast. Loehner, a winner of Thater all the way back in 1989 wasn’t able to hold off full chasing squads from both Colavita and Kelly and was absorbed in the final laps setting the stage for another bunch gallop. Empire’s Clayton Barrows, who marked the early part of the race well was able to represent the team in the group sprint finishing 7th overall.

As the final NRC of the season for Empire the team was able to do another season of solid national results finishing up as one of the top teams in America. The season is far from over though as the team sets off to Vermont next week for the Green Mountain Stage Race and followed by the Univest Grand Prix in Pennsylvia and the Bear Mountain Fall Classic in Harriman, NY.

Left to right: Paul Martin (Panther), Mike Margarite...

Left to right: Paul Martin (Panther), Mike Margarite (Empire/Northwave), and 2009 US Crit Champ Justin England all driving the winning breakaway.

Mike Margarite 3rd at US Criterium Nationals!

Congrats to Mike for a great weekend of racing at Downer Grove. Margarite, generally designated as a long hilly road racer, makes a jump against the country’s best elite men taking the last podium spot. Stephan Kincaid finished a strong 7th and Hollenbach 13th.

The rain soaked course made for a dangerous tricky race. Margarite initiated the break after working his way up to the front riding solo for 3 of the 12 final laps of the 80k event. Mike was quickly joined by Justin England (Giant Strawberry), Paul Martin (Panther), and two more riders. “England started to sit on and I knew he was waiting for a moment to put in a late attack”, said Margarite of the finale tactics. “I kept it steady while Martin and I rolled through. Martin was still going full gas while I was keeping some in reserve. England went at the bottom of the hill while I was sitting second wheel. A rider behind jump right on and then crashed in the corner blocking us off. In retrospect I should have been making the same move England did. Martin and I gave chase separately but England was long gone by then and I wasn’t gaining any on Martin”.

“This is a brilliant result for Mike”, commented DS Mike Sherry. ” He’s generally not a crit rider and was originally out here to help 3 fast finishing teammates but the conditions favored a big diesel like Mike who can clearly take huge workload and still have legs to match some top-notch riders.”

Barrows first amateur at Downers Grove tune-up

Empire has great legs on day one at Downers Grove with Clayton Barrows finishing 4th behind Pipp (Bissell Pro Cycling), Menzies (Ouch/Maxxis), and Jeremy Powers (Jelly Belly Pro Cycling).
