Loehner on the podium in a hard fought Freedom Tour

John Loehner shows some steady form building initiating the winning break and taking 3rd to Kyle Wamsley (Colavita Sutter Home) at Sunday’s Freedom tour.  John countered a move that was already well covered by Empire’s Kevin Molloy and Mike Margarite drawing out Wamsley, Colavita’s crit break specialist.  The pair were later joined and Wamsley proved to have the best legs in the end. John finished 3rd overall taking the last podium spot.

Loehner, a medical director at Montefoire Medical Center in the Bronx, has shown anything is possible including bouncing back to race at a high level despite many obsticles.  His 2009 season plagued with extremely intense work hours in addition to recoverying from a major head injury less than 12 months ago in a training accident. He won a NYC race the previous week and came out to play with a two deep Pro 1/2 fields this week in NJ and Saturday’s Tour of Hilltowns.

Saturday’s Tour of Hilltowns also went well for Mike Margarite who finished 4th out of a very select group. It was Colavita’s Dan Vallencourt who would take the win this day.  An early break of 15 formed early on in the race which Margarite was able to bridge to.  The group was shaken out a little on a hard 9k climb midrace. Margarite put in a major attack late in the race to bridge to Vallencourt who went solo earlier but was swept up with 200 meters to go just missing out on a podium spot.
